Prepare to start dying heterosexuals.

Jerry just gave the okay to put HIV infected crap in the donor
pipeline.

Oh! You got infected? Sorry that was just a paperwork slipup.
So sorry, call your insurance agent.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Latest on California legislation
allowing transplants of HIV-infected organs (all times local):

2:05 p.m.

California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed emergency legislation to
allow a man with HIV to receive part of his HIV-positive
husband’s liver before the surgery becomes too dangerous,
possibly within weeks.

The state Legislature rushed to approve the measure Friday.
Brown spokeswoman Deborah Hoffman says it’s “a life-saving
matter.”

The federal government recently authorized transplants of HIV-
infected organs to patients who have the disease, but it still
had been illegal in California and more than a dozen other
states.

Dr. Peter Stock, transplant surgeon at the University of
California, San Francisco Medical Center, says he hopes to
perform the operation quickly, but he’ll need time to do tests
and preparation on the patients.

There are 65 HIV-positive patients waiting for kidney or liver
transplants at the hospital.

I don't generally see a problem transplanting organs between HIV+
patients, but there are numerous strains of HIV floating around
out there.

For example, if the donor has a particularly drug-resistant strain
of HIV, the donee will also be infected with that strain, making
his current effective antiviral treatment useless. Though the
number of such donations will be small, it will still lead to a
rise in drug-resistant infections, not just the donee but all the
other people the donee infects.

Then think about the doctors and hospital staff: 20 years ago no
surgeon in his right mind would operate on an HIV patient. Then
laws were passed forcing them to. I imagine they perform the
surgery in Ebola hazmat suits.
