I am documented Infected on November 12,1981 going on to 27 years this
year.

Ryan is believed to be the first child in a Rhode Island public school
to announce that he has HIV. Officials at the state Health Department
and the Department of Education said he is probably not the only
student with HIV. But it is nearly impossible to track because they
are not required to notify anyone and state and federal
confidentiality laws prohibit officials from disclosing any such
information without a student's consent.

A slim boy with blond hair and brown eyes, Ryan talked with newspaper
reporters yesterday afternoon at the School Department administration
building. He was accompanied by his parents, who said going public was
strictly Ryan's decision.

"I couldn't keep it a secret," Ryan, who will turn 13 in November,
said succinctly. "I just want people to know that I'm not going to die
soon. I'm the same person I've always been. And I don't have AIDS."

Until three months ago, the Gralinskis thought they were an average
family with twin boys. Their reality was shattered in June when the
family received a phone call from the hospital where the boys were
born and was told there was a chance that a blood transfusion Ryan
received shortly after birth was contaminated.

Yes i am starting meds again right now, ive been off them for 3 years.
I ussual take them for a couple years and then stop for a while.

Yeah i keep track of it, my last t-cell count was only like 11 or
something stupid, but once i take meds they will go back up.
I have been in single digits before then shot up to 400+

I have never been sick from the HIV and have pretty much always done
what i wanted without letting it stop me.

the sad part is, as long as ive been dealing with it, ive only just
recently met a poz person to hang out with around my age.

What motivates you to take HIV medication?

well i just always did it, and didnt think about it and it was fine.
Kinda like mind over matter. Right now im having a hard time getting
back on meds, because they started making me violently sick and i just
couldnt deal. Im on a few meds right now that still make me throw up
every single morning of my life. I get sick in the morning from the meds
at night, and i gotta wake up and take more.. it blows.
I just think about the good stuff and try to make the best of the good
things i have, and have done, and will do in the future.

I was wondering why you took HIV medication when it has such a
negative affect on your health.

Perhaps, in some ways, I can understand your position. I haven't had
a CD4 count done for almost a year; my last results were around the
hundred mark. Previous to that I hadn't had my CD4 counted for
several years. Of course following my results last year I was
pressurised and offered bribes to take HIV drugs, but I refused them.

I must admit I feel a bit left out of the whole HIV thing. A bit like
being part of a football team, but not playing and watching games from
the subs bench.

U HAVETO REMEMBER HIV IS A VERY SLOW DISEASE. IF I WERE U I WOULD NOT WAIT TO TAKE SOME OF THE NEWER DRUGS. WAITING TILL U GET SICK COULD PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK. I WAS DIAGNOSED IN 83 THE ONLY OTHER MEN THAT HAVE BEE POZ THAT LONG HAVE TAKED MEDS. I PERSONALLY THINK MANY EARLY DEATHS WERE DUE TO REINFECTION. U CAN GET DIFFERENT STRAINS OF HIV. THERE IS NOW A SUPER STRAIN THAT KILS IN 5 YEARS EVEN WITH DRUGS.

And yet you have survived, Ryan, and for so
long.

There is never anything that someone like me
can say to an HIV+ person that can help them
feel better. However, your and Martin's very
survival, your courage under such trying and
hard conditions, speaks volumes to many who
are coping with the overhanging cloud, some
of whom might be right on the edge of giving
up.

If you're not already doing so, you both ought
to consider reaching as many people as you
can, maybe writing a paper or a book. Coping
can be made to appear very easy, but it never
really is an easy task.

Some would say, "You must be doing *some-
thing* right!" and others might just think you
are both very "lucky". And I say, "Who cares!"
Your long survival, whether seeming trivial or
magnificent, is enough to present others with
hope.

And I for one hope you both live long and
high-quality-filled lives!

I thought I was the only one left. I had an HTLV3 test in 1983 and I was patient 0007. My first partner died publicly in the Sun newspaper as he was one of the first people in London to get AIDS. He was 7ft 2" and ginger so he was not hard to spot and had a really hard time.

I am having real problems with my local council who want to put me in a hostel because ey consider HIV to be manageable now and have decided that doctors advice is not valid when dealing with housing issues.

How are you finding life? It feels like we have gone back to 1979 again.

Hi, Ryan, you should know that there are many men (and woman) who have survived for many years. .Myself, I was infected when I was 18 years old and am now 51. In many ways I joke and say "I fucked up and didn't die!" This only means that when I signed up for my private disability insurance I chose not to pay he extra premium for an income rider that would at least kept my payments tied to the rise of inflation. I do have a pretty good amount coming in each month, but when it is the same as it was in 1994, you can see that things get tight! Also, I have no IRA or any other "retirement" account to help as I continue to get older! My partner is also a long-term partner is also in the range of 30 years. We strongly believe that we can know when we were first infected because our first sex partners died of
AIDS.

Ryan, I hope that you are hanging in there,just know that keeping your sense of humor about the thins that happen to you. There was a time (about a year) where I was amazingly constipated even after working with an ENT from UCLA and anoth from one of the premier HIV medical groups located in Beverly Hills. But when I was out doing things from going grocery shopping to needing to just hope out of my car and do it on the side of the road! Of course I was devastated at the time but at te end of the day, these made for terrifically funny stories that will last you a lifetime. just find something to laugh at about anything that you do and it will help you get by in many areas of your life!

Listen I hate to be the one to break the news but you haven't been infected let alone documented HIV+ since 1981. There wasn't even a test developed until 1987 in the Spring. I'm a retrovirologist who has pioneered HIV/AIDS research and treatment regimens since the beginning and I remember the frustrations and the heart palpitations due trying to find what this new GRID disease was and finally we could begin developing therapies when we knew what we were dealing with. The biggest thing I loathe is people falsely claiminh I tested positive in 1981 when there was no test, no knowledge of wetherthis was a bacteria or protozoan or virus and only 5 known cases were reported in 1981and my friend a all those early cases are dead. It beehoves me why people would want to claim being patient zero and ckaim resposibfor this endemic. Don't challenge me because you di not have the intellectual capacity to understand the fueld of micro cellular biology etc.

My mom has had HIV since September 17 1983 she's still around :)
She got it from a blood transfusion when she gave birth to my sister, she had only lost one pint of blood. The hospitals didn't check blood back then for HIV.

Ryan - bravo! I thought I might be the last. I found out about my status the year Clinton was first elected. That's Ancient History, it should be studied in schools. All I can remember which isn't much these days since surviving the multiple cerebral hemorrhages 15-years ago (There's a story in that!) The point is they gave us poisons which caused more side-effects than could fit on a pill bottle. Too make matters worse, I was a middle-aged man when I was infected. I'm now 66 but feel eighty and the government has already reneged on three of the promises they made when I first registered as an HIV+ patient. Jeez!

But this is your blog. And Sir, I salute you! You and too few others remember how the pariah were segregated and used as lab rats. We still are treated like leapers. Christ!

"Thy will be done!" is the only prayer I bother with. "You're still alive?!" is how my doctor of forty years greets me. And he never fails to remind me that the only medical procedure I haven't had is an Autopsy. Thank God I discovered a long time ago that a sense of humor is the best tonic of all.

I was diagnosed with full blown aids in 1990 and a cd4 count of 12. I have been on many meds over the years starting with azt in 1993.I had every opportunist infection you can get including terrible side effects like Steven Johnson syndrome ,lost all my skin.I am still alive after 26 years Thank GOD.

Only few family members know about this... We've kept it discreet as HIV patients are often stigmatised.
Am I miracle or just a regular case?

You are an exception. About 1% of the caucasian population carries a
genetic mutation that confers immunity to the virus. One copy of the
gene confers partial immunity, two copies full immunity.

I am not sure if this is the same mutation that involves red blood
cells which contain markers which trick the virus into attaching
to them instead of T-cells. Since red blood cells contain no DNA,
the virus is deactivated. This helps keep the infection in check.
The majority of Africans lack this mutation, which may explain why
they suffer from a disproportionate percentage of infections,
even those born and raised in North America and Europe. They seem
especially susceptible to the virus.

My name is Mary I have been pos Hiv since June 9 1995. I don't have anymore to talk to that's positive like myself. I have trouble even sharing with my family or friends. People can be really stupid about it. I have been really sick lately and have had feelings of just giving up.R really could use some Hiv positive friends💕

HOW COULD THEY DOCUMENT THAT. I HAD MY VIRUS GROWN IN A CULTURE IN 1983. I TOOK THE TEST SHORTLY BEFORE THAT AND IT WAS NEGATIVE, ONLY IN 1990 DID I TURN ANTIBODY POZ.

Hey my name is Dustin, im now 38 as of dec 7th 2017 and I was born with Hemophilia, Severe Factor 8 deficiency and the medicine I was given in the 80s was infected and many hemophiliacs were infected and have died from it, the drug companies knew it was infected and sent it out anyway and My doctor thinks i was infected arround 4 to 5yrs of age I study computer science, physics and electrical engineering and I read and research alot and i belive I know how to cure HIV but im not a liscensed pharmacist or doctor. I just Have time where others dont. So 34yrs POSITIVE

In 1981, I was 13 years old. And, I lost my virginity that year to a wonderfully loving man of 23. HIV/AIDS scared me so much during the '80s and '90s that I mostly chose abstinence over sexual encounters. I I've had 3 loving relationships in my life. My 1st relationship lasted 1.5 years. My 2nd partner and I were together for 8 years. The 1st four years of our relationship was heavenly. Then, he seemed to change. His mood swings and increased secrecy puzzled me. It was a constant roller coaster ride. Yet. I loved him unconditionally and respected his privacy. I discovered during our final year together that he was diagnosed HIV+ in the 4th year of our relationship, so he chose to not tell me. One time (during our 6th year together) we didn't use a condom. This is when I must have been affected with the virus. I was formally diagnosed in February 2004. My partner died of Aids in March 2004. I was so stressed from working 60 hours a week, visiting my partner in the hospital daily, going to 3 wakes in one week, etc. That I conceded to go on HIV meds. And, as a healthy vegetarian and naturalist. I detest taking meds and going to doctors. It has been 14 years. I'm now legally married to my husband (still amazed we can legally marry in our lifetime). He's known of my HIV+ status since day 1 and truly loves me. I remember taking care of AIDS patients during my 20s when I worked in the medical field in the '80s and early '90s. Both friends and patients suffered terrible deaths. But, no matter who the victims were, I always gave them love, respect, peace and healing energy with a friendly smile. Later I would cry on my time. Yet, when I was in their presence, it was their time. We all deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I love my 2nd partner and I still miss him every day...😊

You guys realize you are posting on a 10 year old thread right? And that “Ryan” hasn’t posted since March 2008? I don’t doubt Ryan is real but it could be likely that this “Ryan” was simply an old school catfish before it was an actual thing and MTV had a show about it. But I think the best advice would be to stop researching it, if one thing should be clear by now it is that the law of attraction exists and James Allen knew what he was talking about when he wrote “ as a man thinketh” over a hundred years ago. The more the think about something and make it real in your head the realer it becomes.
